Blog 5- Vietnam War

The Vietnam War took place in an area known as Indochina a place with Indian and Chinese influences and descendants. Indochina was a number of French colonies such as Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, and Tonkin. This passage includes important documents stating events and turning points in the Vietnam war. The first source by The Origins of Vietnam states, “Between 1946 and 1954, France fought a counterinsurgency campaign against the nationalist Viet Minh forces led by Ho Chi Minh. The United States assisted the French war effort with funds, arms, and advisors. They would go on to assist the French for seven out of the eight years of war, however, their efforts were not enough. On the eve of the Geneva Peace Conference in 1954, Viet Minh forces defeated the French army at Dien Bien Phu.” This would go on to split Vietnam into two types of government. With the United States feared a leak of communism into their country. They would go on to support the South Vietnamese from the Communist party known as North Vietnam. “With the United States help in establishing the Republic of Vietnam or South Vietnam, the United States would also back Ngo Dinh Diem as prime minister. Diem, who had lived in the United States, was a committed anti-communist”(Origins of Vietnam). Diew was a very corrupt governor who would prosecute any South Vietnamese that was not Catholic this would go onto a huge uprise in protest. As most of the South Vietnamese population were Buddist. This would ultimately end in the arrest and assassination of Prime minister Diem.

How was the United States involved in aiding the French Colonies of Indochina in the War?

What problems did the South Vietnamese face with their newly appointed Prime Minister?

  1. The United States was involved in aiding the French colonies of Indochina in the war by assisting with funds, arms, and advisors. "The United States financially supported the French military's effort to retain control over its colonies in Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos" (The Origins of the Vietnam War). "The Americans provided weapons and support" ( The Origins of the Vietnam War). Diem, the newly appointed Prime Minister, was a anticommunist, which lead to the U.S having to have Diem as governor, because of their fear of communism. Diem was very corrupt though, he prosecuted only South Vietnamese population that were not catholic. Most of the South Vietnamese population were Buddhist, which ultimately lead to conflict.

Those problems were being controlled by a communist and having their country/city over thrown. The Origins of the Vietnam War state, "Diem’s government, however, and its Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN) could not contain the communist insurgency seeking the reunification of Vietnam. ..., South Vietnam stumbled before insurgent Vietcong (VC) units." And ,"South Vietnam continued to deteriorate" (The Origins of the Vietnam War).

  3. The U.S. would aid the French colonies in Indochina by sending supplies and assistants to aid in fighting the war. American yawp states that “The United States assisted the French war effort with funds, arms, and advisors” (The Origins of the Vietnam War). This aid, However, would not be efficiently used due to the corruption within the South Vietnamese government. American yawp, when referring to the South Vietnamese government, states that “Diem, a corrupt leader propped up by the American government with little domestic support” (The Origins of the Vietnam War). This was due to Diem’s régime persecuting the majority Buddhist population.

The United States helped the French with military support. The U.S. would assist the French for seven out of the eight years of the war. When the war was over Vietnam split into two the north and south Vietnam. The United States put Ngo Dinh Diem in charge as prime minister. Diem was against anything that was not Christianity. It did not go over well with South Vietnam because most of the people in South Vietnam were Buddhist, which did not end well for the people.

Diem was the South Vietnamese prime minister during this time. Many of the South Vietnamese were Buddhist and Diem was strictly Christian, which did not end well leading to his assassination.

  6. The US focused on bolstering Frances Military when supporting them. “Between 1946 and 1954, France fought a counterinsurgency campaign against the nationalist Viet Minh forces led by Ho Chi Minh. The United States assisted the French war effort with funds, arms, and advisors, but it was not enough. On the eve of the Geneva Peace Conference in 1954, Viet Minh forces defeated the French army at Dien Bien Phu.” Source: The Origins of the Vietnam War, American YAWP. After the French were defeated Vietnam came under the control of Diem, a corrupt man. Things would start to go downhill for the people in Vietnam as they would be caught in a whirlwind of politics, being largely controlled by foreign governments. Source, The Origins of the Vietnam War, American YAWP. “Diem, a corrupt leader propped up by the American government with little domestic support, was assassinated in 1963. A merry-go-round of military dictators followed as the situation in South Vietnam continued to deteriorate.”
